Weird Science

Dear Diary,

A while ago, Joshua told us he wanted to be in the Science Fair. My original thought was, "Okay, what kind of work has to be done for this?" I don't know why I was worried about the amount of work and time that has to go into one of these things....it's not my work - anymore. After some research and discussion, Joshua chose his topic. He spent some nights performing his experiments, writing out and typing his findings, gluing pictures and captions on his presentation board and even making a video practicing his presentation. 

The day of the fair finally arrived and he was as ready as he could ever be. I was so proud of him. He wasn't nervous. He was calm, cool and collected. And it showed! He presented to the judge "in private" (no parents allowed) and afterwards I was asked if he had ever done something like this before. I explained this was his first one and she said she was surprised at how well spoken and knowledgable he was on his subject. 

Bring on the 3rd grade Science Fair! Joshua is ready!

Extracurricular Activities

Dear Diary,

My kids like to play video games. And ever since their Uncle Marty introduced them a game called Minecraft, it has been increasingly harder to pry their eyes away from gaming. Our house rule use to be that video games were to only be played on the weekends. Great rule! It worked out the best, except I did get some slack from their dad. (He wanted to play with them on his days off.) Then, the rule got changed. It could be played every day, for a limited time as long as all their homework got done. This one was fine. Worked out BEST for dad because he got to play with them on his days off, but I still had a bear-of-a-time getting them away from it, even though they had limits. Kids always want more and they are willing to see how far they can take you to YOUR limits. So I changed the rule back. Video games are for WEEKENDS ONLY! Life is good now. Life is better. I’m happier. The kids are happier (even though they don’t realize it) because I’m not yelling at them to get off their games because time is up.

Sometimes, the boys (because Nina can ALWAYS find something to do) walk around wondering what they can do if they can’t play video games. It’s SO annoying, especially when our house is FILLED with thoughtful, educational, fun, mind-stimulating, and yes, expensive, gifts/toys. Not to mention book shelves lined with books!! Then there are days when they know exactly what they are going to fill their time and minds with. And these are my absolute FAVORITE days.
